Overview

Xmas ARchy is a corporate augmented reality portal Program-Ace built as a New Year gift for its customers, partners, and friends, developed as a festive modification of the company's own ARchy the Rabbit AR project. The markerless AR portal lets a user step through into a fully explorable, animated holiday scene filled with visual effects, viewed simply through a mobile device camera.

The challenge

Create an AR portal that people can experience and feel like a magical reality, using only a phone camera to explore the combined AR and real environment.
Deliver quick, responsive technical performance despite the resource demands of a markerless AR portal running on mobile devices.
Treat the project as a proof of concept for a new AR portal offering, since it was Program-Ace's first AR portal and needed to be reshaped to meet future client requirements.

Approach and Solution

Program-Ace used Unity and a markerless AR approach to bring Xmas ARchy to life:

Built a static AR portal that a user can walk into and explore a celebration scene with an animated environment
Used ARKit and ARCore to render the portal without markers, keeping the experience fully markerless
Created tailor-made animations, graphics, objects, and backgrounds for a festive mood and atmosphere
Designed the portal concept to be reusable for other purposes, such as showcasing room designs, cars, or houses

Technology Stack

Program-Ace built the AR portal in Unity for iOS and Android devices supporting ARKit and ARCore. The complete application took 140 hours to deliver with a team of two developers, two artists, one animator, and one QA expert.
