Overview

Program-Ace built an immersive training solution for VR, MR, and web platforms centered on a highly detailed 3D visualization of an engine control unit. The tool was designed to develop technical skills and make crucial knowledge accessible to servicemen and specialists on navy vessels that rely on such units, letting trainees learn the unit's workings without risking safety or needing a physical copy.

The challenge

Creating a training solution that made the engine unit understandable and easy to work with for mariners, requiring the team to master every process and part before adapting it into a realistic interactive experience.
Building VR and MR versions without any drop in quality, including replacing mouse-based clicking with high-precision tracking methods suited to each platform.
Crafting a separate web-based platform for result monitoring, where supervisors could manage the collective results and data of many trainees through a simple, intuitive admin experience.

Approach and Solution

Program-Ace took a two-pronged approach, building both the trainee-facing interface and a web platform for supervisors and admins:

Built a 3D model of the engine unit with interactive options presented all around it
Enabled switching between a reading mode and a hands-on mode with animations of the unit operation
Created an accurate, lifelike representation of the real engine controller unit, down to the smallest screws and bolts
Optimized performance and movement tracking for consistent training experience across MR, VR, and web
Delivered a web-based admin panel showing detailed trainee performance, interactions, and analytics

Technology Stack

The project team included multiple 3D artists and designers, a project manager and subject matter expert, two Unity developers, and a QA engineer. The app was written in C# in Visual Studio, with 3D assets created in Photoshop and 3ds Max, and animation added with Unity and DoTween. The hands-on builds targeted HoloLens (MR) and Oculus (VR), with the web version made accessible on mainstream devices.

Value Delivered

This training solution was built successfully and deployed on devices of different platforms – MR (Hololens), VR (Oculus and others), and web. All the planned functionality was implemented effectively and navy vessels that house engine control units got a valuable new tool for training specialists and troubleshooting issues. More specific benefits include:

The training process for navy engineers and other specialists became more accessible and clear. With the solution, they can learn the workings of the control unit without risking their safety or needing a physical copy of the unit.
Immersion was added to the learning experience. Thanks to the high detail and accuracy of the model and the expansive interactive options available to users in a virtual environment, trainees get an experience analogous to hands-on education and can start fully working with the unit right after completion.
Trainers and supervisors received superb tools for monitoring the training process. With the help of their web-based admin panel, they can keep track of results and plan follow-up lessons without interfering with the immersive experience.
