Hexagonium is a mobile MMO video game that uses elements of both turn-based and real-time strategies. Making the most of the massively multiplayer online model, this game supports heavy simultaneous usage and features addicting, fast-paced gameplay for users around the world. It has been released for iPhone and Android as a free-to-play game. The application proves Program-Ace’s capacity for developing complex online gaming solutions from scratch supported by appropriately-designed servers and software architecture.
Designed to primarily target a mid-core audience that have particular affinity for medieval/fantasy aesthetics.
Specific Target Demographics:
Our objectives were basically two-fold. The first was to design an addicting and fun strategy game from scratch that is simple to learn but difficult to master. The second was to fully integrate this game into a MMO, mobile-based format. Each goal came with its own unique challenges. For the former, we needed to devise a game scheme that would appeal to casual gamers but have the depth to satisfy more intense players. For the latter, we needed to precisely structure the game and the servers in order to perform seamlessly in real-time under heavy traffic.
We decided to pursue a strategy that incorporated aspects of real-time and turn-based games in order to offer something new and challenging. The basic breakdown of how the game functions is as follows: A user chooses a world to play in. This world is represented as a map populated by other real players. The map is divided into tiles. Each tile contains a strategic resource. The player's goal is to gain control of tiles with his armies, collect resources from them, and then build structures and units to compete against other players. We chose to wrap the game mechanics in a medieval/fantasy aesthetic and theme due to its popularity for a wide demographic of users.
Research regarding mid-core mobile gaming has revealed that the most successful incorporate short-gaming sessions with longer-term narratives. In line with this, we decided to structure Hexagonium so that each “world” has a time limit. When the time limit is reached, players receive rewards based on their performance that can be used in future worlds. This has resulted in a game that can be easily played during commutes, while waiting for others, or other common situations for mid-core mobile gaming. It retains, however, an in-depth reward scheme, highly-variant gameplay, and an MMO online community that inspires continued usage and retention.
