King of Juice is a casual arcade-style game in which players, faced with an onslaught of fruit, must correctly sort them to make juice. The game makes the most of motion tracking technology to offer an utterly unique gaming experience. It can also be played on mobile devices by using simple swipe gestures.
The general target audience are casual gamers that are interested in a quick-to-learn but addictive and replayable experience. Casual gamers are, however, a rather broad category, including males and females of almost all ages.
Our objective was to use motion tracking technology to create a fun casual game. It was our goal for the game to have a simple learning curve but enough variance in difficulty to encourage replayability. The challenge was to do so in a manner that was fun, addicting, and appealing for a wide range of users.
Our solution was to create an arcade-style game with a simple concept wrapped in an attractive aesthetic. In the game, the player’s goal is collect fruit in order to make juice. Various types of fruit roll down a chute at the player, who must then direct them into the correct trough. In order to progress to the next level, a certain number of fruits must be gathered. If too many of the incorrect fruit are gathered, the fruit’s quality (represented as a percentage) drops, which eventually results in failing the level. The graphics of the game are 3D with a playful, cartoony aesthetic befitting the targeted demographic.
The functional structure of the solution allows for use by motion tracking and touchscreen technologies. Motion tracking captures a user’s hand motions, which in turn allows programs to read these gestures. From here, developers can program these gestures to result in different actions within the virtual space. In King of Juice, the user sees the fruit rolling towards him/her and must use his/her hands to push them into the correct basket. This gesture, done physically, mimics the action that would done be in real-life and is accurately represented within the game-space. For those without a motion tracking device, users can sort the fruit by performing the finger swipe gesture on a smartphone or tablet.
Juice can’t make itself. Warm up those joints and have the most fun sorting fruit you could ever imagine!
